Total cost combines the base and additional costs entered. Profit/loss percentage uses total cost; profit margin uses selling price.

What is Profit and Loss?

A profit occurs when the selling price is greater than the total cost. A loss occurs when the selling price is lower. When they are equal, the transaction is at break-even.

For a shop owner, cost can include the purchase price and direct delivery or packaging costs. For a freelancer or service provider, it can include labour, materials and subcontracting for that job. The answer reflects only the costs you include.

How to Calculate Profit

Profit = Selling Price − Total Cost

Profit Percentage = (Profit ÷ Total Cost) × 100

If total cost is Rs. 8,000 and selling price is Rs. 10,000, profit is Rs. 2,000. Dividing Rs. 2,000 by Rs. 8,000 gives a 25% profit percentage based on cost.

How to Calculate Loss

Loss = Total Cost − Selling Price

Loss Percentage = (Loss ÷ Total Cost) × 100

If total cost is Rs. 10,000 and selling price is Rs. 8,000, the loss is Rs. 2,000. The loss percentage is 20% because Rs. 2,000 is one fifth of the cost.

Profit Percentage vs Profit Margin

These percentages use different bases. Profit percentage compares profit with cost. Profit margin compares profit with selling price.

With an Rs. 8,000 cost, Rs. 10,000 selling price and Rs. 2,000 profit, the profit percentage is 25% (2,000 ÷ 8,000), while the profit margin is 20% (2,000 ÷ 10,000).

What Does Break-even Mean?

If something costs Rs. 10,000 in total and sells for Rs. 10,000, it produces neither profit nor loss. This calculator calls that transaction break-even.

This is a simple transaction-level comparison. It does not perform a full business break-even analysis involving fixed costs, sales volume or contribution margin.
