Amounts are rounded to 2 decimal places. Successive discounts round each discount amount before the next step. Reverse results are estimates rounded to cents; effective discount uses the displayed amounts.
What is a Discount?
A discount reduces the original price of a product or service. A product priced at Rs. 10,000 with 20% off costs Rs. 8,000: the reduction is Rs. 2,000.
Discounts are often advertised as percentages, but the amount saved helps you compare offers in money terms. Check whether an offer applies to the whole purchase or only selected items before entering the original price.
How to Calculate a Discount
Discount Amount = Original Price × (Discount Percentage ÷ 100)
Final Price = Original Price − Discount Amount
First multiply the original price by the percentage divided by 100. Subtract that saving from the original price to find what you pay.
Worked Example
For an original price of Rs. 10,000 and a 20% discount:
10,000 × 20 ÷ 100 = Rs. 2,000 saved
10,000 − 2,000 = Rs. 8,000 final price
The original price is Rs. 10,000, you save Rs. 2,000, and the final price is Rs. 8,000.
How Do Multiple Discounts Work?
Successive discounts apply one after another. The second percentage applies to the reduced price, so simply adding the percentages overstates the saving.
Start with Rs. 10,000. A 20% first discount saves Rs. 2,000 and leaves Rs. 8,000. An additional 10% saves 10% of Rs. 8,000, or Rs. 800. The final price is Rs. 7,200.
The total saving is Rs. 2,800. Dividing Rs. 2,800 by Rs. 10,000 gives an effective discount of 28%.
20% + 10% successive discounts result in an effective 28% discount, not 30%. This calculator provides two discount levels. Check the seller's terms to confirm that both offers can be applied together.
How to Find the Original Price Before a Discount
If you know the final price and the percentage reduction, divide by the fraction of the price still being paid:
Original Price = Final Price ÷ (1 − Discount Percentage ÷ 100)
After a 20% discount, you pay 80% of the original price. A final price of Rs. 8,000 therefore gives:
Rs. 8,000 ÷ 0.80 = Rs. 10,000
The original price was Rs. 10,000 and the saving was Rs. 2,000. A 100% discount cannot be reversed: every original price would become zero, so the original cannot be determined from that final price.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate 20% off a price?
Multiply the price by 0.20 to find the saving, then subtract it. On Rs. 1,000, you save Rs. 200 and pay Rs. 800.
What does 25% off mean?
The price is reduced by one quarter. On an Rs. 1,000 purchase, 25% off saves Rs. 250 and leaves Rs. 750 to pay.
How do I calculate the final price after a discount?
Use Final Price = Original Price − (Original Price × Discount % ÷ 100). A 100% discount makes the final price zero.
How do I find the original price before a discount?
Divide the final price by (1 − discount percentage ÷ 100). Rs. 8,000 after 20% off implies an original price of Rs. 10,000. This does not work at 100% off.
Is 20% off plus another 10% off equal to 30% off?
No. The second discount applies to the already reduced price. On Rs. 10,000, 20% followed by 10% leaves Rs. 7,200, an effective 28% discount.
Can I use decimal discounts such as 12.5%?
Yes. Enter up to two decimal places. For example, 12.5% off Rs. 1,000 saves Rs. 125 and gives a final price of Rs. 875.
Can I use this calculator for services as well as products?
Yes. Enter the original price of the service and the agreed percentage reduction. Use the same scope or quantity for all prices.
Does the calculator include Sales Tax or GST?
No. It calculates discounts only. For tax arithmetic, use the Sales Tax / GST Calculator separately with the applicable amount and rate.
