Estimate a Project Price
Uses the calculated target hourly rate as a simple starting estimate.
Estimated Project Price
This is a planning estimate. Actual rates depend on your work, experience, market, client, scope, risk and contract terms.
How to Calculate Your Freelance Hourly Rate
Start with your desired annual income and add the annual expenses needed to run your work. Estimate available hours from your days, hours and working weeks, then reduce them to the share you can realistically bill.
Available Hours = Days per Week × Hours per Day × Working Weeks
Billable Hours = Available Hours × Billable Time %
Minimum Hourly Rate = (Desired Income + Expenses) ÷ Billable Hours
Add the optional planning buffer to required revenue before calculating the target hourly rate.
Why You Should Not Divide Your Income by Every Working Hour
A freelancer may work eight hours without being able to invoice all eight. Finding clients, preparing quotations, invoicing, administration, email, meetings, marketing, bookkeeping, learning and scheduling all take time.
A realistic billable percentage makes the estimate more useful. There is no universal ideal percentage; base it on your own working pattern and records.
What Freelance Expenses Should I Include?
Relevant expenses can include software subscriptions, internet, equipment, hosting, advertising, professional services, payment-processing fees, workspace costs, subcontracting and business travel. Include costs that are relevant to operating your own work.
The calculator does not determine jurisdiction-specific deductions or tax liability.
Hourly Rate vs Project Rate
An hourly rate charges for time. A project rate is an agreed price for completing a defined scope. At Rs. 1,500 per hour, 20 estimated hours give a basic project estimate of Rs. 30,000.
Actual project pricing may also reflect complexity, revisions, urgency, risk, scope, expertise and value delivered. The project estimator is a starting point, not a required price.
Worked Example
A freelancer wants Rs. 1,200,000 annual income, expects Rs. 300,000 in expenses, works 5 days × 8 hours × 48 weeks, bills 60% of available time and adds a 15% planning buffer.
| Available Hours | 5 × 8 × 48 = 1,920 |
|---|---|
| Billable Hours | 1,920 × 60% = 1,152 |
| Revenue Before Buffer | Rs. 1,200,000 + Rs. 300,000 = Rs. 1,500,000 |
| 15% Buffer | Rs. 225,000 |
| Annual Revenue Target | Rs. 1,725,000 |
| Minimum Hourly Rate | About Rs. 1,302.08/hour |
| Target Hourly Rate | About Rs. 1,497.40/hour |
The result estimates the revenue needed for each billable hour. It does not determine the market rate or guarantee that every planned hour will be sold.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate my freelance hourly rate?
Add desired income and business expenses, include any planning buffer, then divide the revenue target by realistic annual billable hours.
Why should I include business expenses?
Freelance revenue must cover the costs of operating the business as well as your personal income goal.
What are billable hours?
They are hours you can charge to clients. Administration, marketing and similar work may be necessary but not directly billable.
Should I charge for all eight hours of my working day?
Only if all eight are genuinely billable under your agreements. Many freelancers spend part of each day on non-billable business work.
What billable percentage should I use?
Use a realistic estimate based on your profession, clients and records. There is no single percentage that suits everyone.
Should I include taxes in my freelance hourly rate?
Tax obligations vary. The optional buffer can support planning, but it does not calculate actual tax liability or provide tax advice.
How do I convert my hourly rate into a project price?
Multiply the target hourly rate by estimated project hours as a starting point, then consider scope, risk, revisions and value.
Can I use this calculator for consulting?
